What are Photofacials?
Photofacials are skin rejuvenating treatments that use lasers specifically designed to reduce or eliminate the appearance of rosacea, birthmarks, freckles, broken capillaries, age spots and past sun damage, acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles and other skin imperfections. These treatments also stimulate the production of collagen to help new skin look fuller and more youthful.
IPL® photofacial treatments diminish skin discolorations, such as brown spots on the skin.
What are the benefits of Photofacials?
Photofacials treat a number of skin imperfections, including uneven skin tones, brown spots and small blood vessels visible on the face. In addition, they also offer the following benefits:
- Use no harsh chemicals
- Non-invasive procedure
- No recovery or downtime
- Resume normal activities after the procedure
Are Photofacials Right for Me?
If you have rosacea, brown spots, sun damage or other skin discolorations, photofacials may be right for you. To determine if they are, we recommend a consultation so that we can evaluate your skin and recommend a photofacial or other skin rejuvenating treatment to correct any of your imperfections or skin damage.
How Do Photofacials Work?
Photofacial treatments work by directing short pulses of light in waves to specific areas of the skin via a handheld device. Each treatment takes between 30 minutes and an hour with nothing actually touching the skin. If needed, a numbing cream and cooling gel may be applied prior to the treatments to help patients with sensitive skin feel more at ease.
The number of treatments needed to see the full results depends on the amount of damage to the skin and the extent of the area to be treated. Most patients see results after the first treatment but typically require a series of five to 10 treatments spread out about four weeks apart to attain the full effects of photofacials.
What is the recovery from Photofacials?
While there is no downtime, for the first week following the photofacial treatment, the skin looks and feels as if it has a mild sunburn. Accordingly, it may begin to lightly peel and look a bit darker than normal; however, this is temporary. Once the area heals, the skin looks much improved – smoother and brighter. Please note that it is imperative patients not mess with the skin while it is peeling as that may cause scarring or permanent discoloration of the pigment. Patients should also wear a full spectrum sunscreen to protect the new skin and maintain the results of the photofacials.
